VELOSOL, JALON 642036187
Not just for cyclists
Bar Velosol on Calle Iglesia 14 in Jalon was previously trading as La Tortuga and before that as La Pista. The bar/restaurant is affiliated with Velosol Cycling and Training in Calpe and provides cyclists with rest and refreshment after the taxing climb from the coast into the Vall del Pop. It is of course open for business for allcomers and not just weary cyclists.
The restaurant is welcoming and decorated with cycling paraphernalia and there is a substantial courtyard where one can savour the extensive range of Belgian beers. The owners are Flemish.
The menu del día costs €13 at lunchtime and €15 in the evening. One of our group opted for the menu and chose wonderfully fresh calamares for his starter and followed this up with sliced pork fillet with frites. The dessert was a chocolate dish.
The others decided to go off piste and had gambas a ajillo (€8) for a starter. Although it was delicious and really fresh, it could have been improved had it been accompanied by sizzling sauce. The main course selected was Hamburguesa Master (€8.50) and this was accompanied by a substantial salad and fries.
Our host treated us to Rioja Añares Crianza 2013 (€15) which was a greatly appreciated. The Belgian owners were most friendly and attentive and the hopefully they will attract more customers as we were the only ones there for lunch. Inclusive of coffees and brandy the cost of our pleasant meal amounted to €27.63 p.p.
