Making progress

We last had lunch in this restaurant over six years ago. One has the choice of dining indoors, in a theatre, complete with stage, but as the weather was clement we decided to go onto the substantial terrace outside looking onto the impressive mountains to the south.

El Progrés is owned by a Cooperative and offers substantial lunches and tremendous value. The menu del día costs €9 for two courses and a half bottle of wine.

For starters we selected gazpacho, higado, Russian salad and calamar rings that were cooked to perfection and not at all rubbery as they so often are. The main courses were a somewhat dry swordfish dish and pork cutlets.

The wines accompanying the food were both from Utiel Requeno and branded Sierra Salino. They were a bit underpowered at just 12% and our host kindly traded up the red to a Cune 2016 (€12). Most of us had profiteroles or ice cream for dessert and followed these with coffee and brandy.

The total cost p.p. of this substantial lunch was €16.23 and El Progrés moved up from two stars to three.
