Succour from El Sequer

Slotted into the rows of townhouses in the Calle Mayor, this very Spanish restaurant has an unobtrusive entrance which completely belies the interior within. The bar leads through to an ample and comfortably appointed dining area and also onto an extensive open terrace at the back for those who prefer “al fresco” dining.

The menu del día costs just €10 for three courses and a half bottle of house wine. For starters, two of our group chose “salteado de alcachofas y bacon” a sautéd mix of artichokes, bacon and onion, a typical Spanish dish. The rest of us chose the paella which was served in  generous portions. It was very good quality and would rate highly in any specialist paella restaurant.

For main course we tucked into wild boar oven cooked stew, oven-cooked rabbit, chicken with mushroom sauce and “fritura de pescadito” – deep fried little fish. All tasty and served in substantial portions.

The selection of desserts were tiramisu, almond tart, bilberry cheesecake, flan or ice cream; with the exception of the ice cream all homemade. The house wines were both called Monte Segária and were from Alicante; our host kindly agreed to trade up for an additional red – Darsena (€12) from Ribero del Duero.

All in all, an exceedingly good value lunch in pleasant surroundings, tucked away in the narrow high street of Jesus Pobre. Well worth a visit. Including coffees and brandies a modest €13.84 p.p.
