MARE,                  BENIDOLEIG        615092515

Focus on fish

Mare is a recently opened fish restaurant located at plaça diputació in Benidoleig. The style inside is elegant and modern and when we lunched there, every available table was fully occupied. The noise level rose as our lunch went on due in part to the echo of Spanish voices around the room.

There are two menus del día on offer priced at €20.70 and €35.70; we all decided to splash out and go for the pricier option. This entitled us to 10 courses which focussed on fish dishes but included sobrasada, a Majorcan spicy pork sausage, a plate of very colourful mushrooms and wonderfully flavoured tomatoes swimming in olive oil.

Our host selected two local wines to accompany lunch, the white was from Jesus Pobre and called Les Freses (€17.20) and the red, Del Moro from Requena (€16.80). Most of us preferred the red.

The fish platters started with sepia or cuttlefish which could have been a bit warmer and less chewy. This was followed by the iconic and very expensive Denia red prawn, which lived up to its reputation.  Finally we tucked into rape or monkfish, one of which had to be sent back to the kitchen as it was undercooked.

There was an excellent almond cake for dessert. Complete with coffees our noisy fishy lunch in Benidoleig cost a hefty €51.07.
