EL QUIJOTE, ORBA 654872338
What a feast!
El Quijote is located at Partida Plans, No.10 which is on the outskirts of Orba on the road to Benidoleig.
It is decorated both inside and out with murals of Don Quijote.
When we arrived the main dining room was packed with Dutch and British lunchers and we were shown to a table in an annex with a maritime theme.
The menu del día is exceptional value, costing just €12, including a half bottle of house wine. There are some 20 starters and about the same number of main courses to choose from. Before we commenced with the meals we had ordered, we were presented with three tapas on the house.
For our starters we had moules mariniere and a Rioja dish of chickpea and sausage. However these were modest compared with the “patatas a lo pobre” which was a plate piled high with potatoes, fried eggs, rashers and ham; enough for most people for a main course.
The house wines, both priced at a modest €6, were a Ruedo Verdejo called Saga and a very pleasant Vino de la Tierra de Castilla called Batuta.
For main course we tucked into a beef stew, pork tenderloin with two different sauces and fritura de pescados.
As with the earlier courses there was a lengthy list of desserts to choose from and we had apple tart with ice cream, a crepe stuffed with cream and smothered in chocolate sauce, coco pudding and a sorbet – all homemade and delicious. these were followed by coffees and a selection of digestifs -all on the house!
There was a great atmosphere in El Quijote, partly because it was packed with happy lunchers, but also the furniture and rustic décor added to the enjoyment.
Probably because it was so busy the service was occasionally on the slow side, but in terms of value for money El Quijote will be hard to surpass. Cost p.p. €16.27
