UN CUINER A L´ESCOLETA DE SAGRA,   SAGRA     965587653

Strange name but great cuisine

 ★★★★☆

This strangely named restaurant which translates from Valenciano into “a cook in the little  school of Sagra” is to be found on the edge of the village of Sagra, in the grounds of the municipal swimming pool.

Sagra itself is inland from Ondara and is twinned with Kilbrittan in Co. Cork and we soon found a Cork connection when placing our order for lunch, as our server had perfected her English over 18 months in Ireland, the last six spent in the delightful seaside town of Kinsale, Co. Cork.

The building at the entrance to the sports ground was originally designed to be a bar but was opened as a restaurant just over one year ago. The dining room is functional, even Spartan and spotlessly clean.

The menu is advertised on a large blackboard on one of the walls and offers the choice of a meal of Tapas or alternatively three starters, a main course and dessert. We all chose the latter option which varied in price according to the main course selected; these ranged from  €9.90 for a rice dish to €17.00 for Ox Tail.

The first of our starters was grilled pan alioli which was a first for most of us and delicious too. This was followed by a fresh salad and finally a dish of cod and onions.

For main course most of our group selected an artistic presentation of lamb, cous cous and pulses – very tasty. Our other diner went for the ox tail and was not disappointed.

Finally for dessert we had a homemade chocolate custard dish which our host insisted be accompanied by a small glass of red mistella. Another first for most of us. Our other diner enjoyed a warm apple dish.

The menus did not include the cost of drinks. We tried the house red, Añacal Dominio de la Vega from Utiel Requena (€6), but moved upmarket to Flor de Vetus from Toro (€13.50), and for white we had a pleasant enough Nuviana Chardonnay (€9.00).

This modest restaurant is pushing out the boundaries with exciting, innovative dishes and deserves to succeed. Total p.p. €27.79
