Meson El Refugio is a long established restaurant in Moraira and the last time our club lunched here was in 2005. It is part of Grupo Canor that has two other restaurants in Moraira, (Gemisant and La Senieta being the other two), and is located on Calle Almacenes no.5 in the old town which is a street just up from the waterfront.

The design of the outside of the restaurant is functional without being particularly attractive and the inside is similar in style.

The menu del día is great value at €11 including three courses and a half bottle of wine.

The choice of starters included entremesas- a selection of cooked meats and cheeses, gaspacho, salad or pelotas – meat balls cooked in a cabbage leaf. DSC01036

The main courses were grilled liver, escalope of pork or grilled sardines. The food was fine although the presentation was rather basic.

The house wines were Albadia del Roble from La Mancha and the white Montesierra from Somantano, both pleasant and reasonably priced at €7.50, although they were included in the price of our menu del día. Our host decided to up the ante and we enjoyed a Rueda Verdejo called Menade (€14) and a 2009 Rioja Crianza called Lagunilla.

Desserts consisted of tiramisu, ice cream, flan, crème catalan or mousse au chocolate. As we had a number of guests in our group from Yorkshire, this proved to be one of the noisiest lunches we have had recently. Price p.p including coffees and brandy was €19.72.
