Lunch in the vineyard

Over five years have passed by since we last had lunch at Casa Susi and this family run restaurant, located at km5.5 on the road from Jalon to Sierra Bernia, has now achieved an extra star.

There are two menus del día priced at €17 and €19 for three courses and as much Jalon wine as you can drink included in the price.

The restaurant is surrounded by vineyards and the mountain scenery is stunning. Being a hot sunny day everyone chose to dine on the shaded terrace rather than inside.

Susi brought us a tapa of a chicken skewer to accompany our first bottle of Jalon wine.

Some of us followed this up with a delicious gazpacho and others with a large fresh salad.

We then all chose the house speciality of lamb with almonds and raisins cooked in a Morrocan Tajin.

Whilst we were enjoying this a musician appeared and entertained us for about an hour.

Our host decided to try Susi´s own branded wine, which is not produced by the Jalon Coop but is still very modestly priced at just €2 a bottle!

We completed our lunch with fruit tarts and ice cream and Susi kindly brought us some mistellas with her compliments. Our lovely relaxing lunch in the vineyards cost €23.62 p.p. It was no surprise that Susi has now moved up to four star status.

Hearty food in rustic surroundings

Verd i Vent is a rambling farmhouse located at km5 on a corner of the Jalon to Bernia road. There is nothing particularly attractive or inviting about the restaurant from the outside but once inside the building there are whitewashed rooms of all shapes and sizes decorated with rustic bric-a-brac.

The menu del día costs €18 for five courses and all the wine you can drink. The wine is served in litre carafes which are filled directly from a barrel at one end of the main dining room. The red wine is pleasant enough but our white wine expert was not impressed with the white offering.DSC00072

We started our lunch with a dish of warm potato salad with garlic and herb sauce. This was followed by a large bowl of hearty vegetable soup. Then we moved on to a simple fresh salad.

For main course there was a choice of shoulder of lamb, duck served with a red berry sauce or grilled Argentinean steak. All were really delicious and substantial.DSC00065

Whilst we were enjoying our main course three musicians added to the atmosphere of the restaurant with medley of well-known Latin American songs.

Tasty crepes were served for dessert and completed our lunch.

Verd i Vent has for many years been a popular stopping off point for tourists visiting Sierra Bernia and the restaurant was already substantially full when we arrived for lunch. It is a credit to the team that run the restaurant that they have upped their game since the last time our club lunched here back in 2008 and provided us with such an enjoyable experience for €19.40 p.p.
