VENTA ROJA,        LLIBER           965731039

Gastronomía inglesa

We have eaten in Venta Roja on numerous occasions, including 2016 and 2013, as it has changed hands many times over the years. It is situated in a substantial building in the Lliber vineyards on the CV750 road between Benissa and Jalon.

The new owners, John and Tina Allsopp, have operated other restaurants in the Costa Blanca and took over at Venta Roja in early May this year. The restaurant is vast and includes a large terrace for outdoor dining.

The menu del día now costs €17.95 for three courses and a drink. For starters our party selected  homemade pate and tomato soup before moving on to the main course options of fresh langostines, pork loin with pepper sauce, steak and ale pie and fish and chips. The cuisine had a definite English feel to it.

The house wines, both red and white were called Viña Martín from Rioja and priced at €8.95.

Some of our group had apple pie with ice cream or lemon meringue for dessert. The rest opted for coffee and chopitos of brandy which were provided by the house. Apart from one member, we were satisfied by our experience at Venta Roja which cost €27.25 p.p.

FINCA LINDI,                   LLIBER             965731125

What a culinary adventure!

On the road from Senija to Llíber (CV745) just before entering the village of Llíber is a turnoff to the right, which is the road to Gata de Gorgos. Here at the junction you will find Finca Lindi.

It is a lovely old house, which is run as a B&B, but from the outside you would have no idea that, by appointment only, Gerard, the Owner/Masterchef  will prepare an outstanding lunch for you. Between the months of September and June up to 20 guests at a time will be served a 7-course lunch on two days each month.  In our case Gerard prepared a special 5-course lunch just for our members at a special price of €25.

We started our lunch with amuse bouche of crispy mussels tempura served with pickled cream.

Our second course was smoked salmon on a carpaccio of cucumber and capers and this delicious dish was followed by a white and green asparagus soup complete with quails eggs, fine slices of ham and dried chorizo.

The fourth course was medallion of pork tenderloin with gambas, served with vegetables, a scoop of rice, mushrooms and a wonderful garlic sauce with herbs.

The wines selected by our host to accompany our exotic dishes were a Palacio de Bornos 2017 verdejo (€5.65) and a 2015 Palacio de Bornos that had been aged in oak (€8.75).  The red was a delicious Bozeto 2016 from Rioja (€7.99)

For dessert we enjoyed a panacota with meringue, vanilla ice cream and warm cherries. This special lunch concluded with coffee, friandises and brandy and cost €34.90 p.p.

BAR VARETES,            LLIBER          659243832/640788329

Tapas under the False Pepper tree

The village of Lliber in the Vall de Pop, otherwise known as the Jalon Valley, must rank as one of the prettiest in the Marina Alta.

Many of the streets have had the tarmac stripped off to reveal to the original stone base and one street has a wonderful display of flowers outside each house.

There is a set of steps that is often used for wedding photographs and Lliber´s  imposing church overlooks the Plaza Mayor.

In fact when our group of lunchers are not heading to the coast we often meet for a pre-lunch drink in the Plaza Mayor under the False Pepper tree just outside Bar Varetes, one of three bar/restaurants in the village square. The tree has become a bit of a legend for freeing up the tongues of those sitting under it.

Bar Varetes changed hands in late 2017 and the new enthusiastic young team have developed the food offering, with a substantial tapas menu. There are almost 30 tapas dishes to choose from as well as other meat and fish plates but we selected a total of seven different tapas to share between us.

Our selection included a wonderful Pate del Hierro, Pelotas, Calamar á la romana, Gambas á la plancha, mini burgers called Figatelles and nicely spicey Patatas bravas.

The only tapa that did not meet with universal approval was the Aspencat, a dish of two grilled vegetables served cold.

The wines accompanying our delicious array of tapas were Dársena, a verdejo from Rueda (€9.50) and Montelciego from Rioja (€8.00).

We completed our lunch under the False Pepper tree with the usual coffees, but the brandies were very generously offered by the casa. The cost of this delightful, relaxed repast in the interior of the Marina Alta was a modest €17.17 p.p.

new venta roja 014

This landmark restaurant on the CV 750 Jalon-Benissa road, overlooking the vineyards of Lliber in the Vall del Pop, has changed management and name four or five times over the past ten years and our last review was in 2013 when it scored two stars.

The menu del día costs €13 and includes three starters, a main course and dessert. The first of our starters was a substantial chicken salad and this was followed by strips of jamon with a fried quail´s egg. The third starter was fresh calamari rings.
The house wines from the Jalon Co-op were passed over by our host in favour of a pleasant Rioja crianza called Azabache (€12), which had the effect of pushing up the cost of our lunch.

For main course we had merluza (hake) in mussels sauce, beef steak with salsa, and one of our group chose pigs cheek with sauce from the à la carte menu for a supplement of €6. We agreed that perhaps with a little less sauce, the dishes could have been more distinctive.
The desserts were bought in ice cream tarts and together with brandies and coffee our lunch cost €27.90 p.p.

Because this restaurant can accommodate over 100 diners, perhaps the management could consider opening one area at a time so that a bit of atmosphere is created; at the moment this is lacking despite the friendly service.new venta roja 015new venta roja 016

VAL DEL POP,     LLIBER   965731798

Value and popular prices!   DSC00397

Val del Pop restaurant is positioned above Llíber, just off the road leading from the scenic village towards Gata de Gorgos.

One enters Val del Pop through heavy carved wooden doors, passing the barbecue grill leading inside to the extensive restaurant complete with cobbled stone floors. DSC00388

The views from the outside terrace over the Pop (sometimes referred to as the Jalon) valley are stunning.

The menu del día is very competitively priced according to the main dish selected, ranging from just €8 up to €11.20. For our starters we selected a hearty meat soup and a substantial fresh salad, both good.

Our host decided to run with the house red which was Marqués de Labranza from Tierra de Castilla, but for the white he traded up to Darsena Verdejo from Rueda, again very reasonably priced at €10.40.

The main courses were all cooked on the Val del Pop´s renowned wood fired barbecue and included shoulder of lamb that just fell off the bone, pork fillet and fillet of beef all served with baked potato, tomato and aubergine.DSC00395

Desserts, as is commonplace in many restaurants here, were bought in and comprised ice cream or flan. It turned out that we were the only guests for lunch this Friday although the following day the owner assured us there was a booking of over 100 guests for a wedding.

Including coffees and brandies this enjoyable lunch cost just €17.90 p.p.
