CASA DE BENI-ASIA,         BENITACHELL    966494042

Oriental delights

The Beni-Asia has been in business for a number of years under the watchful eye of the diminutive Fan-Fan. It is located on Calle Assegador which is the road leading up to Cumbre del Sol, just past the traffic lights in town.

The choice of menus is extensive and our host took an executive decision to opt for the 5 people menu (priced at €13 p.p.) times three, there being a record 15 around the table for lunch – 10 members and 5 guests.

We started with prawn and duck roll, deliciously crisp with one of the sauces offered, served on warm plates. Then on to a huge supply of shredded crispy duck, which was wrapped by us into the thinnest of gossamer warm pancakes.

A change of pace then took place, as supplies of sweet and sour chicken, Thai beef with green leaf vegetable, individually roasted pork ribs, more prawns, this time with bamboo and Chinese mushrooms, and a mixed vegetable dish.

All this was accompanied by Yang Chow fried rice and noodles. Included in the price of the meal was a half bottle of Alcanta house wine, or water. Some of the members decided to trade up to a Verdejo-Viura blend named Palacio de Vivero (€8.95).

The meal terminated with a glass of Magno brandy and the total cost amounted to €18.04 a head. Truly a prince´s feast at a pauper´s price.

TRIBUS GOURMET DINER,          BENITACHELL          966493291

Tribus Gourmet Diner is located at the top of Benitachell at Avenida Alicante 51. The small restaurant has a very pleasant ambience and quirky décor. On offer is a tasting menu of six divine courses for €20 including a half bottle of wine.

Starting with toast, olives and mild alioli we moved on to enjoy a tempura dish of chicken, prawn mushroom and pineapple.

The tomato soup with basil was orgasmic. Accompanying these wonderfully presented dishes was a Rioja called Campo Aldea and a Verdejo from LaMancha called Allozo (€9.50).

A tasty dish of light salmon with a mojo sauce followed by a perfecrtly cooked small portion of fillet mignon.

Our gourmet lunch was completed with a brownie and ice cream. Neill, the owner and chef of Tribus is an inspiration.

Along with coffee and brandy this fabulous lunch cost €27.73.

MONTIVEDEO,                     BENITATXELL                    966493142

Rustic steak house offering good value

Restaurante Montivedeo is to be found on the edge of Benitatxell on the road leading to Cumbre del Sol. It is in a free standing building with a substantial car park and the interior is furnished in a welcoming rustic style.

The current owners have only run this restaurant for less than a month, but the chef has a lot of experience from working in many of the best known restaurants in nearby Moraira.
The menu del día costs just €14 including a half bottle of wine.

We were presented with croquetas of cod before we started our first courses of ceasar salad, onion soup and timbal of vegetables. All good honest dishes.
The house wines were both from Tierra de Castilla, the white, a verdejo with the unusual name of Montalvo Wilmot and the red was called Quintos de la Tejera. Both perfectly acceptable.

Our main courses included salmon steak, roast rabbit and roast shoulder of lamb and oven cooked rice. All wholesome.MONTIVEDEO 014
Desserts were panacota al caramel which turned out to be blancmange, and pumpkin pie but not quite to the standard of the earlier courses. MONTIVEDEO 019

However in terms of value for money Montivideo is hard to beat and including coffees and brandies our rustic lunch cost just over €18 p.p.

On top of  the world? DSC00328

Cumbre del Sol is a vast urbanisation on a treeless mountainside situated above the town of Benitachell between Javea and Moraira. It commands stunning views over the Mediterranean, but other than the Pepe la Sal supermarket and the Restaurant La Cumbre, it is somewhat soulless. The restaurant itself is elegant and is located in a modern building with a swimming pool and terrace.

The menu del día is priced at €18 and includes bread and alioli, a selection of five tapas, sorbet with cava, main course, dessert and a half bottle of wine per person. The house wine, both white and red, is a very acceptable Conde de Caralt from Cataluyna. DSC00330

The tapas were a mixed bag, most were delicious but the spring roll was particularly oily. The lemon sorbet that followed was distinctly lacking any lemon flavour.

Our main courses included a wonderful salmon papilotte and a tasty roast shoulder of lamb. The beef tournedo was tender but rather salty.

The desserts were enjoyable and included an unusual cold strawberry soup, chocolate cake and assorted ice creams. Our lunch totalled just over €24 p.p. including coffee and brandy.  2 la cumbre (1)PH 73
