CASA RIPOLL, ALTEA LA VELLA 965848068
Genuine article, no ripoff
Altea la Vella or Alta la Vieja as it used to be called, is a peaceful little village a few kilometres inland from its namesake of Altea. The magnificent Sierra Bernia provided a spectacular backdrop as we sat on the tranquil terrace of the family run Casa Ripoll, which is located on Cura Llinares.
The menu del día costs a modest €9 for three courses and a glass of wine. There was a choice of three starters, a dish of lentilles, a portion of paella or a pisto which was a selection of cooked vegetables sitting underneath a fried egg.
Good, honest, unpretentious fare. The house white was rather bland so our host order a bottle of the house red which was a very acceptable Faustino Rivero Ulecia from Rioja (€8.50).
For main course we chose calamares á la romana and albondigas (meatballs), both good. The service was attentive and friendly, if a bit on the speedy side, so we took a break before moving on to the desserts. These were bought in rather than homemade and consisted of ice cream, flan or natillas.
