BISTROT DE XALÓ, JALON 626190221
Ooh la la!
The Bistrot de Xaló, is located on the first floor of La Teulera Commercial Centre above the Premier Property showrooms on the road leading from Jalon towards Alcalali. In a previous existence this was a Swiss run restaurant called Fusion and being out of sight of the passing trade must be a bit of a challenge for the current French chef to attract customers upstairs.
The restaurant is simply decorated with straight backed chairs around the tables, a tiled floor and a few paintings on the walls. Some late night smokey jazz was playing in the background as we sat down at our table. It transpired that the chef, Christian, not only prepares the lunch but also serves them too, so we had a bit of a wait before we placed our order.
The menu del día costs just €9.50 for a choice of three starters, three main courses and three desserts. Also included is a glass of Jalon wine. One of our party followed the menu del día from start to finish whereas others chose their starters from the à la carte options.
The starter selected from the menu was a tasty Quiche and the off piste items selected were Escargots à la Provencal (€12) and nine really delicious mussels stuffed with garlic butter (€5.50); just a pity there weren’t a few more. We had a Muscadet sur lie (€12) with our starters rather than the Jalon offering.
We all chose spare ribs for our main course and they were accompanied by wonderful chou-fleur au gratin and a bottle of a Bordeaux Superieur called Chateau Fillon (€16.50). Finally we selected home made Tarte Tatin and chocolate mousse for desserts and were not disappointed.
The food at the Bistrot de Xaló is delicious and hopefully Christian the chef will be rewarded for his efforts by word of mouth encouraging more customers to venture up the stairs to this haven of French cuisine. Cost p.p. €25.50
