On the waterfront

 

                            

Botavara is the Valencian word for a boom (Spanish: Auge) and fits in well with the name of this restaurant, which is on the waterfront looking on to the yacht harbour in Denia. The décor inside Botavara has a strong maritime feel with items of sailing gear featuring throughout.

The menu del día is priced at €15.50 and we enjoyed three starter dishes comprising a selection of chorizo, serrano ham and cheese, calamares and chiperones followed by wonderful steamed mussels. All excellent and very fresh.

                     

On the wine front our host chose a Rueda Verdejo called Monasterio de Palazuelos (€12.90) which was a good match for our fish starters.

                                            

For our main courses we had a meaty paella and rather undercooked pork chops. Like so many restaurants Botavara was almost empty due to the Corona virus but despite this we enjoyed our lunch which including coffees and chopitos cost €25.20 p.p.

 Great potential –one to watch

         

Benigembla, at the west end of the Val de Pop has been transformed in recent months by some wonderful, high quality murals on many of the buildings. Indeed there is one on the front of the restaurant Beni-Ruta showing a map of towns and villages throughout Valencia that incorporate the prefix “Beni” in their name.

Beni-Ruta has only been open for a few weeks so our review is almost certainly premature. The restaurant has just been constructed and fitted out to a high standard and will in due course extend to three levels. There are numerous references to Route 66 in the décor and this presumably where the name Beni-Ruta came from as the Spanish owner appears to have lived and worked in the USA for a number of years.

We had our lunch in the spacious dining area on the first floor and later were allowed to have a look at the other floors above. The top floor is a rooftop patio that will be developed as an open air barbecue area with spectacular views onto the Sierra del Cavall Verd and the Val del Pop.

The menu del día is priced at €12 and starts with a fresh salad. We then selected three of the starters, namely very tasty revuelto  de verduras, macaroni bolognesa and a rich tomato soup.

On the wine front we enjoyed a Rueda verdejo called Analivia (€14) and a Rioja called Ontañón (€15).

                 

               

For main course we had ternera estufa and a chicken dish, both good. Finally we had for dessert apple strudel with ice cream and this was followed by coffees and chopitos.  The price per person for this interesting lunch was €21.80 and we will undoubtedly be returning to Beni-Ruta as it develops its full potential.

Mixed opinions

 Normally our group mark restaurants within a few points of each other but in the case of Casa Rosita the span was from  1 star to 5 stars. Fortunately these two mavericks were brought into line by the rest of us who awarded Rosita 3 stars.

          

Casa Rosita is to be found at 3 Calle Major in the centre of the delightful village of Jesús Pobre. The restaurant looks quite modest from the outside but once inside it develops into several dining areas including a patio at the rear which is where we had our lunch.

The menu del día is priced at a very competitive €10 for three courses, including a glass of wine. Our host selected a Rueda Verdejo called Gran Cardiel and for red Nuviana Tinto, both priced at €13 and enjoyable.

                                         

In fact it is possible to interchange dishes from the first course selection with those from the main courses, so some of our group had bacon and eggs as a starter and others as a main course. Most of us had Favada for our starter, a class of a soup with beans, basic but good.

       

The main courses selected were chicken with mushroom sauce, cod croquettes, lomo a la plancha, and kidneys cooked Jerez style. Whilst the food was simple, it was wholesome and tasty.

The service was a bit erratic and we were ushered out of Casa Rosita at just 15.45.

Together with desserts and/or coffees and brandies our visit to Jesús Pobre cost €18.25 p.p.

Mountains of food and wine

             

Although not the highest village in the Sierra Bernia mountains, Pinos can certainly lay claim to some of the most spectacular scenery and views in the Marina Alta.  Technically part of Benissa, the village has some three restaurants catering to the locals as well as the many tourists that drive up the CV-749.

Restaurante  Pinos, also known locally as Maria´s, is on the right hand side of the road coming from Benissa and almost at the end of the village.  The restaurant is on two levels that share a great view down to the coast.

                         

The menu del día is priced according to the main course selected and in our case ranged from €13 (pork chops) to €17 (cordero en salsa). Included in the price was salad and a choice of sardines or delicious salchica as well as at least a half bottle of wine. The wine in question was Albadia del Roble, both red and white from La Mancha, and proved to be most acceptable.

                  

Besides the pork chops (the portion was three of them!) and lamb with sauce, we also tucked into stewed rabbit (€15) and lamb chops (also €15). Hearty and delicious, all of them. We were serenaded by a visiting guitarist for part of our lunch, although some of our group found him a little loud.

All in all a most enjoyable mountain lunch for just €17 p.p.

Still going strong

 Casa Aleluya is a landmark bar and restaurant in Jalon where the original owner used to entertain customers by pouring wine from a bottle over his forehead and let gravity move it down over his face and into his mouth.

          

The restaurant is located opposite the new visitors centre for tourists near where the weekly rastro takes place. The precise address is Avd. Juan Carlos 1, 51 but this street name is scheduled to be changed in the months to come.

Our table was located in the patio area at the back of the building and on our way there we passed the new microbrewery that has recently produced an award winning beer.

We decided to have a selection of tapas ranging in price from €2 up to €6.50 per dish. These included very tasty ham and cheese pieces, some rather bland prawns, chicken wings, smoked liver meatballs and patatas bravas.

               

Our host chose the reliable Rueda Verdejo from Darsena and a Rioja called El Niño de Campillo – both pleasant. We opted not to have desserts but instead sampled the award winning beer and very good it was too!

Together with coffees and chopitos our pleasant tapas lunch cost €22 p.p.

The Jávea golf club is located at km 4.5 on the CV285 which links the Arenal district of Jávea with Benitachell. The restaurant and bar are open to visitors and club members alike.

 

Our host had reserved a table on the terrace overlooking the course and onto the impressive Montgó mountain. The menu del día was priced at €19.50 although some of the main courses cost an extra €4.50.

For starters we selected goat´s cheese salad, grilled scallops (an extra €4), beef carpaccio and sashimi de salmon. All absolutely delicious.

        

The wines accompanying our lunch were a Rueda Verdejo called Cruz de San Martín and a Rioja called Aradon: both cost €13.50 and were sound.

For main course we chose Confit de Pato and Entrecote both of which attracted an extra charge. The confit was accompanied by a very tasty orange based sauce. Other dishes selected were veal cheek, grilled salmon and dorado –all excellent.

                            

 

This was a most enjoyable lunch in a beautiful setting. Cost €34.33 p.p. We awarded the Jávea Golf club restaurant with five stars!

Wonderful seaside setting, delicious tapas

    

Cala Baladrar is a small cove a few kilometres south of Moraira and is part of Benissa Costa. This is the location of the wonderfully named Chiringuito,  Olala. It is not the easiest restaurant to find but with stunning views over the sea towards the Peñon de Ifach it is definitely worth the effort.

Like most chiringuitos or beach bars it is mainly a fresco dining under pine trees. On the day we went there was a major storm brewing, adding to the sense of drama.

There is no menu del día, but this was not a problem as our interest was in having a lunch of tapas.  We selected four plates of tapas and they were magnificent.

We started with Torrajo, which was delicious grilled bread with a strong garlic alioli. There followed Patatas bravas accompanied with a tasty hot sauce. The boquerones or fried anchovies were really fresh. Finally we had steamed mussels and some our group declared them to the best they had ever eaten. O! la! la!

These four tapas dishes cost a total of just €30 and we then made a big mistake. We each decided to have a burger (€10 per unit) which was poor value in comparison and also in no way as tasty as the tapas. Next time we will stick to tapas only.

                         

Our host selected a Rueda called  Beronia (€17) and a red from Utiel Requena called B.O. Bobal (€13) both delicious.

Desserts were apple tarts and cheesecakes. Together with coffees and chopitos our lunch by the seaside cost €32.66 p.p. but next time it should be about €25 by sticking to tapas.

Good value al fresco fare

 

Casa Edy is located at 35 Av. Mediterráneo, the main street running through Teulada. From the street the restaurant does not attract attention but once you enter, it is deceptively large in size with a substantial terrace providing a pleasant venue for al fresco dining.

There are two menus del día priced at €15 and €20 according to the main course selected. All but one of our group chose the cheaper menu yet curiously the more expensive meal was the disappointing one with a chewy entrecote for main course.

Amongst the starters were mussels served with a delicious soup, scrambled eggs with mushrooms, boquerones and a seafood platter – all good.

   

For main course we enjoyed baby squid, sole, lamb chops and pork fillet and these were accompanied by the house wines, both from Albacete and called Santa Negro, the white a Macabeo and the red a Tempranillo. Both wines were priced at the bargain price of just €4.

              

           

Desserts and chopitos completed our pleasant lunch costing a competitive €17.80 p.p.

Soulless

This Pizzeria is located on Avenida L´Alcudia 20. It is to the east of Benissa´s main street. When we arrived we were the only customers and as there were very few lights switched on the restaurant had a rather gloomy atmosphere.

The menu del día was priced at a competitive €13. For starters most of us had smoked salmon salad whilst two of us enjoyed milhojes de tomate with queso de Burgos, essentially sliced raw tomato with cheese.

 

For wines our host selected the well respected Verdejo called Verdeo (€12) and a Ribero del Duero called Carramimbre (€14.90) and both were most enjoyable. Our main courses included Pizza Hawaii and a Pizza Peperoni, both good. Some of us opted for Spaghetti with gambas; the pasta was tasty but there were only two shrimps accompanying it.

     

Overall good food and drink let down by the lack of atmosphere. Our lunch, including coffees and brandies cost €21.31

The Pick of Pego

 

This restaurant is located in a beautiful courtyard at 18. Calle Ramon & Cajal. There is an indoor restaurant as well around the courtyard which at one time was part of a street called Calle del Olmo. Olmo is Spanish for Elm and as there was an Elm tree there at one time this lead to the restaurant being named L´om. Nothing to do with Lombardy.

The setting is absolutely stunning and L´om has a menu del día priced at €12.50 but does not include any drinks.

We started with a flavoursome salad and our host selected a couple of great wines to accompany our meal. These were a Rueda called Jose Pariente (€19) and the famous Muga Rioja (€23), both delicious.

                    

Our starters included a pasta salad with shrimps and mussels, Cocas and Fideua and were all very much appreciated.  For main course we had pork cutlets which were rather disappointing and chewy.

                                    

However the overall atmosphere of L´om and the warm welcome and attention of our hostess Marie José, ensured we had a memorable and enjoyable lunch costing €26.96.
